What Is Reunification Therapy In A Family Law Court Case?
Today I want to discuss what reunification therapy is in a family law court case.
It’s a therapy that is generally designed to repair parent child relationships that have been damaged, that have been broken due to a high conflict divorce. Most often, reunification therapy is often court ordered when there exist parental alienation or abandonment and it is the court’s way of trying to repair the relationships between the parties and ultimately the child, as the court has the best interest of the children at heart.
This therapy is considered a family therapy in that all parties must participate and go in with an open mind, go in with the idea of getting this therapy to fix the relationships amongst all the parties involved, the parents and the child or the children. If we do not have cooperation from both parents, this sort of therapy will not work. Even though the therapist will do their best to try to get everybody involved. If one of the parties is not attempting to heal relationships, to learn better and healthier communication skills between the parents and between the child and the parents, this therapy will not work.
This is not confidential. The therapist will report to the court whether the parties are cooperating, whether one of the parties is being stubborn and not doing anything other than just sitting there and refusing to cooperate or intimidating the other parent or the child. At the end of this, the therapist will write a report for the court and the court does look at this report to make decisions about custody, to make decisions about visitations, to see which parent is more able to, willing to parent the child. If one of them is being stubborn and not cooperating.
