What Are The Benefits of a Settlement Conference?

At LJ Law we pride ourselves in always pushing for agreements. I believe that coming to agreements can be the best route for couples going through a divorce or custody battle. For this reason, I often urge my clients to opt for a settlement conference.

The purpose of the settlement conference is to try to settle the issues of a case before the hearing or a trial becomes necessary. On the day of the scheduled settlement conference, both parties come together in front of a judge or magistrate that is assigned to the case who presides over the meeting. It is a less formal meeting than going into court. It gives the divorcing couple a chance to review all the issues at stake and to work towards a mutually beneficial settlement. The ultimate benefit I find in a settlement conference is that it gives couples a better ability to make the decisions for themselves instead of letting the court decide what their future will look like.

Settlement conferences typically last maybe a half a day to a day, depending on the individual parties, the issues involved, and whether or not the parties are attending with good faith to try to come to settlement agreements.

I am a big proponent for settlement conferences, like I said, for the following benefits it gives my clients:

  1. Again, and most importantly, it gives the couples more control over the outcome of the case and, ultimately, their future.
  2. It is less stressful for couples to attend a settlement conference than go into trial.
  3. It is less costly than a trial.
