Will I Still Receive My Stimulus Check If I Am Behind on Child Support Payments?

Today’s question deals with the COVID-19 pandemic stimulus check and child support arrears. The question I received was, “Will I still receive my stimulus check if I am behind on my child support payments?” The first thing that’s important to know is that once an individual is behind on child support the state child support agencies report this and the amount of the arrears to the Treasury Department. The Treasury Department then collects the overdue child support by cutting or withholding federal payments as an offset. Therefore, the COVID-19 stimulus checks of about $1200 per adult and an additional $500 per child may be reduced by the IRS by the amount of past-due child support payments that have been reported from the state to the Treasury Department.

In other words, if you are behind on your child support payment and it has been reported by the state to the Treasury Department, then your stimulus check could be reduced by the amount that you owe. Or, depending on your amount owed it could be completely eliminated. So be sure to check and see what amount you are entitled to through the stimulus check and what you owe as child support arrears to give you an idea of what you can or cannot expect from the stimulus check.
